Biographies

Catherine Anholt Image

Catherine Anholt holds an MA in Fine Art from the Royal College of Art. She is well known for more than 150 children's books created with her husband, Laurence. The Anholts' books have won numerous prizes, including two Nestle Smarties Gold Awards and are published all over the world.

Kate Ackerley Image

Kate Ackerley is a painter in oils who works and exhibits in the coastal countryside of Suffolk, where the landscape is so oftern the sky itself, its drama and energy. Her work conveys an atmosphere and sense of place, a meeting of inner and outer worlds. Her themes are what lies beneath or beyond the surface. St Elizabeth Hospice is a charity she is keen to support, in particular in memory of a painter friend, Celia Witney, who died there in December 2009.

Sean Bean Image

Sean Bean has enjoyed a rich career in film and television spanning over 25 years. As Richard Sharpe in the Sharpe series and in roles that include Alec Trevelyan in Goldeneye and Boromir in the Lord of the Rings trilogy he has attracted a devoted following. His next screen appearance will be as Zeus in the film adaptation of Percy Jackson and the Olympians - The Lightning Thief. Sean has been painting and drawing all his working life.

Deborah Burrow grew up in the wonderful countryside of Suffolk. She says of her work: 'The whole process of making art to me is like the natural growth and rhythm of the landscapes I portray - it starts with a seed and flourishes at its own pace, giving rise to a rich depth, vibrancy and texture.

John Burningham Image

John Burningham was educated at Summerhill, Suffolk and later graduated from the Central School of Art. His first book, Borka: The Adventures of a Goose with No Feathers, won the Kate Greenaway Medal in 1963, as did Mr Grumpy's Outing in 1970. He collaborated with Ian Fleming on Chitty Chitty Bang Bang and designed the model of the famous car. His appeal as one of the UK's most distinguished illustrators is acknowledged the world over. John has written and illustrated 50 books, celebrated in a handsome anthology of his work published in 2009.

Kevin Crossley-Holland Image

Kevin Crossley-Holland is a well-known poet and prize-winning author for children. His most recent book is The Hidden Roads, a memoir of childhood on the Norfolk coast, which was also the setting for Storm, winner of the Carnegie Medal. The Arthur trilogy (The Seeing Stone, At the Crossing-Places and King of the Middle March) combines historical fiction with the retelling of Arthurian legend. The trilogy has won worldwide critical acclaim and has been translated into 21 languages. Kevin is a Fellow of the Royal Society of Literature. He lives in north Norfolk.

Robert Crowther Image

Robert Crowther is one of the world's leading paper engineers. His first book, The Most Amazing Hide-and-Seek Alphabet Book, was published in 1977 and is still an international best seller. Robert studied art at college in Norwich and took his MA at the Royal College of Art. He has worked as a freelance designer for Madame Tussaud's, the London Planetarium and Warwick Castle. He has published over 35 pop-ups, most recently a transportation series, and gives pop-up workshops in schools and libraries.

Joyce Dunbar Image

Joyce Dunbar has written over 80 books for children, including picture books (Baby Bird, The Spring Rabbit), a series of short humorous novels and the 'Mouse and Mole' stories, which have been animated for television. She lives and works in Norwich.

Tim Fargher Image

Tim Fargher - is a painter and sculptor who has lived in Suffolk for most of his life. He has travelled extensively, and exhibited in London, Suffolk, and abroad over the last thirty years.Tim has a painting and photographs in the collection of St. Elizabeth Hospice, arising from Paul Heiney's book Pulling Punches Methuen 1988. His work can also be found in public, corporate, and private collections all over the world.

Janet French gained an honours degree in Art & Design and Fine Art at Colchester School of Art & Design. She is a member of Artworks, Gainsborough's House Print Workshop, The Essex Art Society and Nine Artists, a collaborative group of London and East Anglian artists.

Esther Freud Image

Esther Freud trained as an actress before writing her first novel Hideous Kinky in 1991. Hideous Kinky was short-listed for the John Llewellyn Rhys Prize and was made into a film starring Kate Winslet. She has since written six more novels, including The Sea House and Love Falls. Her new novel, Lucky Break, is eagerly awaited Esther painted her beautiful deckchair canvas with her daughter Anna Morrissey.

Pete Grainger Image

Pete Grainger is a Suffolk-based artist who appreciates all art and is never short of ideas. He makes a mental note of anything that catches his eye, from chickens and pigs to a Suffolk cottage in the moonlight - and then sketches them down to work on later. His affection for people is a constant source of inspiration, whether it is a group of people laughing in a restaurant or someone looking in a shop window.

Susan Gunn graduated with a first-class degree from Norwich University College of the Arts. She has exhibited widely over the past decade including exhibitions in association with Arts Council England, Contemporary Art Norwich, Rollo Contemporary Art, London, The Fine Art Society, London & Salthouse Church, in conjunction with the North Norfolk Exhibition Project. She received international recognition when she was awarded the Sovereign European Painting Prize at Bonhams, London in 2006. In 2008 her painted elephant sculpture 'Jemima', exhibited in Norwich City Centre as part of the Elephant Parade Project in conjunction with the Forum Trust raised a record £25,000 for the Born-Free Foundation & Click Sargent Charities.

Geoff Halpin has been a graphic designer and creative director in London for 40 years, working on music album covers, advertising campaigns, corporate identity and brand packaging. He has designed album covers for The New York Dolls, Elton John, Paul McCartney and Mike Rutherford, created the current Universal Studios identity and the Johnnie Walker whisky brand mark. His design work has been exhibited in the Pompidou Centre Paris. Geoff's images have been published in Photo Magazine Paris and exhibited in London and Paris.

Roger Hardy - B.1969 - Roger has been working in Suffolk since 2000, moving back to the landscape he knew as a child.He now has a strong following of regular collectors of his work. Known predominately for his colourful paintings of Dunwich Heath and surroundings. Recently he has made a series of sculptures from objects collected from auctions and antique shops. These have been well received, and were the focus of a feature recently in Suffolk magazine. This year he will be showing some of his work with Foss Fine Art at the affordable art fair in London.

Bernard Hill Image

Bernard Hill is an actor with a distinguished career in film, stage and television. He came to prominence in the role of Yosser Hughes in Boys from the Blackstuff in 1982 and has since been seen in roles such as the ship's captain in Titanic (1997) and King Théoden in the Lord of the Rings trilogy. His new film, The Kid, will be released in 2010.

Belinda King Image

Belinda King was brought up in Kenya and studied painting at St Martin's School of Art in London. She was a founder member and former chair of Gainsborough's House Print Workshop in Sudbury, Suffolk. Her current work is landscape-based. She has had many solo exhibitions both in this country and abroad.

Eleonora Knowland Image

Eleonora Knowland was born in Holland in 1952, moved to London at the age of three and was educated at a Rudolph Steiner school. Married to a Suffolk farmer, she has lived in East Anglia for over 30 years and much of her creative inspiration is derived from the immensity of the open Suffolk landscape.

David McKee Image

David McKee went to Art College in Plymouth and to Hornsey School of Art. He is a painter, cartoonist and author/illustrator of over 30 much-loved picture books. Among his best-known creations are 'Elmer', 'Mr Benn' and 'King Rollo' all of whom have been dramatised in film. David has also illustrated some of the more recent Paddington Bear books. He divides his time between England and France.

Gwen Millward Image

Gwen Millward graduated from Edinburgh University with a first-class degree in Illustration and was awarded the Helen A. Rose Bequest for art. Gwen's captivating illustrations can be found in Guess what I found in Dragon Wood, The Bog Baby and most recently The King of Tiny Things. The Beasties a collaboration with her mother, Jenny Nimmo is published by Egmont books in October 2010. Currently working on a book with Simon & Schuster Gwen is writing her very first Children's book, due to be published next year with Egmont.

David Wynn Millward Image

David Wynn Millward studied Law at the University of St Andrews. After two years in advertising he began work as a freelance artist, cartoonist and painter and produced a children's book. From 1971 to 1974 he studied at the Royal Academy Schools and later at Goldsmiths, University of London, winning prizes for screen-printing, etching and oil painting. From 1980 David has run the renowned Henllan Mill Summer School of Painting and Drawing in Powys.
